In his book Claiming the Desert: Settlers, Homesteaders and Ranchers in Oro Valley, Arizona, 1865-1965, author Jim Williams explores life in Oro Valley when the town was still an open and desolate desert. Step into the settlers’ world of simple adobe homes, kerosene lamps, and rough roads. Learn how they claimed the land, established schools, and raised cattle. Discover what everyday life was like on the homestead and the special challenges faced by women and Hispanic settlers.
