Interpretative Retail


Western National Parks Association (WNPA) seeks candidates for a Park Store Coordinator opportunity to help lead the retail operation of our park store.  This position assists with the operation of one or more WNPA stores inside our western national parks.  Using your entrepreneurial skills to achieve sales and operational goals, drive revenue, and propose new ways to connect store(s) to visitors. Our staff uphold WNPA’s mission to create advocates for national parks and will use an innovative approach to blending a traditional retail experience with relevant park stories, emphasizing visitor education through a retail experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Oversees store operations in accordance with applicable Federal and state laws, WNPA policies and procedures, and professional business standards;

May utilize volunteer workforce to help achieve goals;

Assists customers with selection of merchandise, making appropriate suggestions and locating and explaining interpretive items;

Creates and maintains positive, productive relationship with NPS and other partners. May attend NPS staff meetings as requested to ensure appropriate WNPA involvement in park activities;

Collaborates with NPS and home office staff to research, propose, maintain, and evaluate an effective educational product mix that engages the visiting public. Products may include custom items, historical reproductions, Native American, and other handmade craft inventory;

Facilitates timely NPS approval and ordering of new items;

Prepares product displays and handles merchandising, advising Home Office of the need for new, improved, or replacement fixtures and equipment;

Collects, secures, deposits and reports receipts and/or oversees those transactions;

Maintains security of, and records for, petty cash fund and change fund;

Safeguards store stock, cash and property in accordance with approved WNPA security procedures. This includes the use of proper procedures to open and close store(s);

Maintains inventory and conducts periodic physical inventory;

Oversees the flow of stock from storage to display to completion of the sales transaction;

Performs other related duties, as assigned.


No supervisory responsibilities are associated with this position.  However, the Park Store Coordinator may collaborate with volunteers working on WNPA’s behalf.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent;

Demonstrated ability to market niche products and programs;

Ability to pass NPS background check to obtain necessary security clearance;

Current driver’s license and proof of auto insurance coverage;

Learning capacity and interest in becoming a subject matter expert in Native American crafts and their cultural significance;

Financial acumen with P&L understanding and proven ability to work within the parameters of a budget;

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

>Computers: Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs, Skype
>Cash register and point of sale systems including  automated inventory systems
>>A copy of the Department of Motor Vehicle driving record; a valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance coverage required
>>Successful NPS background check to obtain necessary security clearance

Travel is infrequent but may be required to use personal vehicle to deposit monies at bank and for occasional purchase of supplies at local stores.

Compensation:  Hourly rate based on duties and responsibilities and locale, plus store discount and clothing allowance

Schedule:  Part time – depending on location (dol), minimally must be available for weekend work approximately 25 hours per week(dol) .  Must be available for a flexible schedule for evening and/ or special events including weekends and seasonal changes to work schedule .
