San Antonio Missions NHP: Mexican Arts Trunk Show

Featuring an incredible variety of Mata Ortiz pottery, Oaxacan woodcarvings, and Zapotec rugs.

Named for the artists’ pueblo in remote river valley in the plains of Mexico, the small group of Mata Ortiz potters create a fusion of revived ancestral symbols and sophisticated contemporary design. Mata Ortiz pots are made in the ancient traditional style: hand-built without a potter’s wheel, and often painted with brushes made from children’s hair. Artists use materials and tools that are locally sourced, and the fuel for pottery firing comes from grass-fed cows and split wood. In addition to this unique pottery, explore Oaxacan folk art woodcarvings, Zapotec rugs, and Mata Ortiz jewelry. Oaxacan woodcarvings are carved entirely by hand from copal wood and painted in bright colors.

Daily pottery firings (weather permitting) at 11 AM & 2 PM, and pottery demonstrations throughout the show.
