Padre Island NS: Sea Turtle Celebration

Mark your calendars! Our biggest sea turtle event EVER is less than a month away! Help us celebrate 100 years of the National Park Service and decades of sea turtle conservation efforts at Padre Island National Seashore! The 2016 Junior Ranger Day will also be combined with the Centennial Sea Turtle Celebration and kids can earn a special-edition Centennial sea turtle badge.

WHAT: Centennial Sea Turtle Celebration

WHEN: Saturday, July 9th- 6:30 am – 1:00 pm IF there’s a hatchling sea turtle release! If there’s not a release, the event will begin at 8:30 am and go until 1:00 pm.

WHERE: Malaquite Visitor Center at Padre Island National Seashore, located about 30 minutes southeast of Corpus Christi, TX

FEATURING:
-Presentations by Dr. Donna Shaver, Chief of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery Division, Dr. Thane Wibbels, Professor of Biology at University of Alabama- Birmingham, and Dr. Pamela Plotkin, Director of Texas Sea Grant
-Educational and interactive sea-turtle themed booths facilitated by Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Sealife Center, South Texas Botanical Gardens, Texas State Aquarium, Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the Marine Science Institute, and more
-Stations with representatives from our Sea Turtle Science and Recovery Division
-Junior Rangers swear-ins and special Centennial sea turtle-edition badge
-A special “Find Your Park” section with rangers representing some of the other national parks of Texas, including Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, Big Thicket National Preserve, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Amistad National Recreation Area, and Fort Davis National Historic Site
-Turtle sand sculpting lessons at Malaquite Beach, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
-Western National Parks Association tent and display
-Live creatures!
-Hidden Treasures aquatic program- collect, learn about, and discover some creatures in the surf that sea turtles eat
-Special beach program at 10:00 am
-Sea turtle watercolor painting and crafts
-Sea turtle-themed face painting
