National Parks Store: The Utah Prairie Dog–Life Among the Red Rocks

Dr. Theodore Manno will discuss the social interactions, mating behaviors, and natural history of Utah prairie dogs.

Romance, fighting, mischief, and (gasp) infanticide all sound like the virtues and vices of a dark and gruesome Western novel. Only this drama plays out in the prairie dog towns of Bryce Canyon National Park. Dr. Theodore Manno – a member of the “Dog Squad” – will discuss the social interactions, mating behaviors, and natural history of Utah prairie dogs. During his presentation he will recount the various “personalities” of prairie dogs; he will also discuss his triumphs and tribulations while studying the rodents in Bryce Canyon National Park.

An author of three books and dozens of periodical or scientific articles, Dr. Manno is President of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science, and his research has been featured in media outlets such as Discovery News, New Scientist, Deseret News, and Public Radio. His book The Utah Prairie Dog: Life Among the Red Rocks from University of Utah Press will be available for signing and sale.

Presentation at 12 PM & 2 PM.
