National Parks Store: Mata Ortiz Pottery Trunk Show

The pottery of Mata Ortiz, one of the finest and most innovative artisanal crafts in the world, represents the puebloan culture, capturing spiritual and ancestral symbolism in beautiful handcrafted pieces. Mata Ortiz is a small pueblo located in the north of Mexico. Due to the efforts of Juan Quezado Celado, this village has seen a renaissance that has engendered economic and artistic blossoming. The potters of Mata Ortiz draw inspiration from ancient Mesoamerican artists.

These beautiful and unique masterpieces reflect a diverse history that includes pre-Hispanic influences fused with American Indian craftsmanship. Mata Ortiz potters balance ancient practice with contemporary flair.

Mata Ortiz artists Jorge Quintana, Aide Gonzales, Hector Gallegos Jr., and Laura Bugarini will be present. Live pottery firings at 11 AM & 2 PM, weather permitting. Artist demonstrations throughout the day.
