Everything in Texas is big, if perhaps not the biggest!* The National Parks of Texas: In Contact with Beauty reminds Texans, and all Americans, that it has 16 national park sites to explore within its state boundaries. Film producer Lynn Boswell visited them all as she created the documentary, a collaboration between The National Parks Conservation Association, the Big Bend Conservancy, and Texas PBS for the NPS Centennial.

The film celebrates the culture, history, wildlife and natural wonders preserved at each site, and is organized chronologically by date of creation. Big Bend National Park, which opened in 1944 and covers more than 800,000 acres of prickly desert, canyons and mountains, comes first. The program wraps up with Waco Mammoth National Monument, which became part of the National Park Service last July.

It is a 50-minute film that highlights many parks and Padre Island, WNPA’s park of the month for July, shows up throughout the film.

*The largest national park is Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, AK (13.2 million acres).
