National Parks Store: Film–The Mystery of Chaco Canyon

Narrated by Robert Redford, The Mystery of Chaco Canyon explores the complex culture of the ancient Puebloans.

20 years of research went into this follow up to Anna Sofaer’s film The Sun Dagger: The Story of America’s Stonehenge unveils the ancient astronomy of Southwestern Puebloans and offers an explanation of the emerging mysteries and enigmas posed by the massive prehistoric ruins at Chaco Canyon National Park in New Mexico.

While some archaeologists believe that Chaco Canyon was primarily an ancient trade center, this film puts forth the theory that it was instead a complex ceremonial center, harmonized by extraordinary astrological alignments of buildings and roads. The Chacoans left no written text to help us understand their culture and their thoughts are preserved in the language of their architecture, roads and light markings.

Aerial and time lapse footage and computer modeling as well as interviews with scholars show how the Chacoans oriented major buildings to the sun and moon to track the movement of light and shadows. Narrated by Robert Redford, The Mystery of Chaco Canyon explores the complex culture of the ancient Puebloans, who lived and thrived both spiritually and materially in the harsh environment of Chaco Canyon.
