11 AM Only

A biological crossroads of incredible diversity, the forests, prairies, and bogs that make up the landscape of Big Thicket National Preserve in southeast Texas are home to a tremendous number of different plant and animal species.

Though mostly avoided by early Native American and European settlers, the area came to be exploited over time— first for timber, and later, for oil. Large areas of the original thicket disappeared as trees were felled and settlement increased.

A growing appreciation of the value of the thicket’s biological diversity led to its designation as a national preserve in 1974. Explore the unique natural and human history with this film that captures the rich story of Big Thicket: America’s First National Preserve.

Running time 16 minutes
