National Parks Store: August Film Series—Black Legend of Lieutenant George Bascom

Presented by author Doug Hocking, Historian

There are two sides to every story.

Legends become truth all too easily. Consider the legend of the Bascom Affair. Lieutenant Bascom’s arrest of the Apache leader Cochise is thought to have ignited the Apache Wars in the 1860s that would last for a quarter of a century. The truth is more complex and less to Bascom’s discredit.

Join author and historian Doug Hocking as he discusses the misrepresentations of basic facts that have crept into the story from a variety of sources, which is now more legend. These facts will resonate with the American consciousness far more than a tale told from history. Study of primary document reveals two leaders struggling with misunderstanding and difficult circumstances. Was one more to blame than the other? Does mission failure mean the leader is at fault? Learn the other side of the legend.

Showings at 12 noon and 2 PM.
